BE CAREFUL! Suggested Gratuity On Checks Could Be Ripping You Off

When you go out to eat now you almost always see a “Suggested Gratuity” at the bottom of your checks now. Honestly I haven’t really thought a lot about them, and kind of just trusted they were right. I mean who actually wants to sit there and figure out 20% of your check.

The problem is those numbers on the bottom of your check aren’t always correct. If you do a simple google search you will see that this isn’t just a one off problem. It’s happening all over the place and people aren’t very happy about it. Just take a look at this receipt that we found online.

At first glance you might not think much about it, but in order for this check to have a 20% gratuity of $8.46 the balance due should be $42.30. That’s almost double what the actual bill is. It looks like these people did the two for $20 deal, and for whatever reason the the gratuity was set on the total including the comped food.

Just something to think about next time you go out to eat. Keep an eye on those gratuity guides.
